Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadeq, President of Cairo University, and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jala El-Azab, Dean of the National Institute for Laser Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Abeer Attia Tawfik, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, a health awareness seminar titled: Monkeypox and Cholera: Reality, Expectations, Understanding, and Prevention was held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. The seminar was delivered by a team from the General Administration for Combating Infectious Diseases at the Ministry of Health and Population, including: - Dr. Shaimaa Mohamed Abdel Wahid, Director General of the General Administration for Combating Infectious Diseases - Dr. Mona Ahmed Abdel Hai, Epidemic Control Specialist - Dr. Marwa Abdel Shafi Mohamed, Specialist for the Acute Neurological Infections Program - Dr. Engy Nashat Rizk, Specialist for Food and Waterborne Diseases The seminar was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Osama Fikry, Professor in the Medical Laser Applications Department at the institute. This event was part of the fruitful collaboration between Cairo University and the General Administration for Combating Infectious Diseases, Preventive Medicine Sector, Ministry of Health. The seminar was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, and postgraduate students. It covered several key awareness and educational topics: - The importance of preventing infectious diseases and modes of transmission. - Differentiating between epidemics and infections. - Guidance on avoiding unhealthy foods, particularly undercooked meats, processed foods, and certain toxic fish species that cause neurological and infectious diseases. - Symptoms, causes, and transmission modes of monkeypox, along with prevention measures. - Detailed discussions on cholera, its symptoms, actual transmission methods, and misconceptions propagated via social media. - Efforts by the Ministry of Health to educate and protect citizens in urban and rural areas from the spread of infectious and chronic diseases. The speakers emphasized: 1. Avoiding misinformation and rumors; no cases of monkeypox or cholera have been reported in Egypt. 2. Adopting proper preventive habits and measures as the safest barrier against the spread of diseases and epidemics. The seminar highlighted the critical role of public health awareness and prevention strategies in combating infectious diseases.
